How It Works

How Our Moving Cost Calculator Works

Our moving cost calculator is a four-step form that collects your route, moving date, home size, contact preference, and contact details. Once submitted, it shows a rough moving cost estimate.

01 · Route

Enter where you're moving from and to

Add your current and destination locations. We use the route to determine the moving distance.

02 · Move Details

Choose your moving date and home size

Select when you plan to move and the size of your home. These details help the calculator account for timing and cost by home size.

03 · Contact Preference

Tell us how you'd like to be contacted

Choose text, email, phone call, or all three. This lets us know how you prefer to receive personalized quotes.

04 · Get Your Estimate

Enter your details and view your estimated range

Add your contact information and submit your request. You'll see your moving distance and a rough estimated cost range.

Note: After you submit the form, you'll see a rough moving cost estimate, not a final mover quote. Up to three moving companies may also send you personalized quotes based on the details you provided.

Our Data

How We Build and Update Our Moving Cost Data

A useful moving cost estimate depends on reliable pricing data. Here's how we collect, update, and review the information behind our calculator.

Mover Pricing & Quotes

We collect current rates, binding estimates, and non-binding estimates from movers across different locations and move types.

Real User Cost Data

We use user-shared quotes, reviews, and anonymous calculator data to compare our ranges with real moving activity.

Moving Price Trends

We reference the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, which tracks price changes for moving, storage, and freight services.

Fuel Price Data

We use fuel-price data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) to follow changes in gasoline and diesel costs.

Interstate Moving Standards

We check federal moving rules from the FMCSA when reviewing guidance related to interstate moves and mover quotes.

Monthly Quality Checks

We add fresh pricing throughout the month and compare data by move type, location, and size before updating ranges.

Estimate vs Quote

Moving Estimate vs. Final Moving Quote

Our calculator moving cost estimate is useful for planning your budget. A mover's written estimate comes later, after the company reviews the details of your move more closely.

Calculator Estimate

Your early planning range

A quick estimate to help you understand what your move may cost.

  • Early planning range
  • Based on the details you enter
  • Helps you set a moving budget
  • Can change as more details are confirmed
  • Not a guaranteed final cost
Mover Quote

Pricing based on your confirmed move

Provided by a moving company after reviewing your move in more detail.

  • Based on confirmed move details
  • Reflects the services you request
  • Used when deciding or booking
  • May be binding or non-binding
  • Subject to the mover's written terms

Why can the final price differ from your estimate?

Your final price can change if the mover finds details that were not included in your original estimate, such as:

Inventory changes Stairs or elevators Long carries Difficult access Specialty items Packing Storage Additional services

Binding estimate

A binding estimate sets the price for the items and services listed in the written estimate. If you add belongings or request extra services, the mover may need to revise the price.

Non-binding estimate

A non-binding estimate is an expected cost, not a guaranteed final price. For interstate moves, the final charge can depend on the actual shipment weight. Under the federal 110% rule, a mover cannot require more than 110% of the non-binding estimate at delivery.
