My experience shows why you must research both the moving broker and the carrier
I used Brightside Moving Group LLC as the broker for my interstate move in March 2026. My experience taught me an important lesson about using a moving broker: researching the broker alone is not enough. Consumers also need to know which carrier will actually transport their belongings and research that company independently before becoming financially committed to the move. My original moving estimate was approximately $2,930, but I ultimately paid $10,502.24 to complete the move. One of my biggest concerns with Brightside is its role in selecting the actual carrier. Brightside assigned Express Movers Services Inc. to handle my belongings. I did not select Express Movers myself. I had relied on Brightside as the broker to arrange my interstate move with an appropriate carrier. Had I known earlier which carrier would ultimately handle my belongings, I would have researched that carrier independently before making a substantial financial commitment. Based on what I know now, I would not have willingly selected Express Movers to handle my move. The financial commitment to Brightside was also substantial. I initially paid $1,048.32, and later paid an additional $1,655 broker fee, for a total of $2,703.32 paid to Brightside before the move. By the time the move approached, I had already committed a significant amount of money. Another major concern was the accuracy and completeness of the estimate. The approximately $2,930 estimate did not adequately prepare me for the additional charges that were ultimately assessed for stairs, bulky items, boxes, packing and other services. Those additional charges contributed substantially to the enormous difference between the original estimate and the $10,502.24 I ultimately paid. I also had a serious dispute concerning the shipment volume. My shipment was billed at 1,200 cubic feet. However, my belongings were delivered in a truck whose published maximum cargo capacity was approximately 763 cubic feet. I could not reconcile being charged for 1,200 cubic feet with delivery in a truck whose published maximum cargo capacity was substantially less than that amount. This discrepancy was one of the principal reasons I pursued complaints and later settlement discussions. I understand that Brightside was the broker and Express Movers was the carrier. However, that distinction became particularly frustrating once problems arose. Brightside had arranged the carrier for my move, but during the dispute the responsibility for compensation became separated between the broker and the carrier. During settlement discussions, Brightside informed me in writing that Express Movers had agreed to provide a $1,000 goodwill contribution, while Brightside offered a separate $500 goodwill contribution. I want to be fair about what happened afterward. Brightside ultimately honored its own commitment and paid me the $500 goodwill contribution, and I appreciate that the company fulfilled that part of the settlement. However, I never received the $1,000 contribution that Brightside had communicated to me for Express Movers. I subsequently contacted Express Movers directly and followed up again, but received no response. This left me in the position of having hired a broker to arrange my move, having the broker select the carrier, and then having to pursue the carrier myself when part of the proposed resolution was not fulfilled. That is one of the aspects of the broker-carrier arrangement that I found most troubling. From a customer's perspective, I contracted with a broker because I expected the broker to help arrange and coordinate the move. When serious problems developed with the carrier selected for me, however, the distinction between broker and carrier became very important in determining who would take responsibility. The most important lesson I learned from this experience is this: if you are considering using a moving broker, do not research only the broker. Before paying a substantial deposit or broker fee or otherwise committing to the move, I strongly recommend asking: • Which carrier will actually transport my belongings? • Can I independently research that carrier before I become financially committed? • What are the carrier's USDOT and MC numbers? • How will the final shipment volume be determined? • What additional charges may apply for stairs, bulky items, boxes, packing, long carries or other services? • What happens if the carrier's final charges are dramatically higher than the broker's estimate? • If a dispute occurs, what responsibility will the broker assume and what will be left for the customer to resolve directly with the carrier? I would also recommend keeping copies of every estimate, inventory list, payment record, Bill of Lading, photograph, email and text message. Brightside eventually communicated with me regarding the dispute and paid the $500 it agreed to pay, and I believe that should be acknowledged. Nevertheless, I remain dissatisfied with the overall brokerage service because of the carrier selected for my move, the substantial financial commitment I had already made to Brightside, the enormous difference between the original estimate and final cost, and the division of responsibility between broker and carrier after serious problems arose. I am sharing this experience so that other consumers can better understand how a broker-arranged interstate move can work and can ask these questions before, rather than after, committing substantial money to a move.
