Guidelines for Moving Companies

By MGM Editorial Team Last updated

Introduction

My Good Movers helps people find a moving company they can trust, and helps good moving companies earn that trust. Honest reviews only work if every company plays by the same rules. To keep reviews fair and useful, every moving company listed on our site must follow these guidelines, as well as our Terms and Conditions, our Privacy Policy and the other policies on our website.

You can also read our Guidelines for Reviewers and How We Keep Reviews Trustworthy to see the rules your customers follow.

Keep Your Profile Accurate

People use your profile to decide whether to trust you with their move. Everything on it must be true and up to date.

  • Use your real business name, address and service areas.
  • Show the USDOT number (and MC number, if you have one) that matches your FMCSA record.
  • Say clearly whether you're a moving company (carrier), a broker, or both.
  • Don't make claims you can't back up, such as "fully insured," "#1 rated" or "licensed in all 50 states."
  • Update your profile when anything changes, such as your address, services or registration.

We check each interstate moving company's USDOT number and FMCSA registration before we list it, and we recheck regularly. If your federal authority becomes inactive or is revoked, we suspend or remove your listing. See Licensing, Brokers and Carriers.

Who Can and Can't Review Your Company?

Anyone who hired your company, booked it or paid it a deposit can review you. That includes customers whose move went wrong or never happened.

These people can't review your company:

  • Owners, employees and agents of your company.
  • Close friends and family of your owners or staff.
  • Competitors, or anyone working for them.
  • Anyone who was paid or offered something to write the review.

Inviting Customers to Review You

You can invite your customers to review you by email from your My Good Movers dashboard. These reviews show an "Invited" label. We may also invite customers who requested quotes through My Good Movers and hired you. Reviews from our invitations, and reviews where the customer shows us proof of the move, show a "Verified" label.

Do

  • Invite every customer, in the same way, whether their move went well or not.
  • Send one invitation per move, after the move date.
  • If your plan's monthly limit means you can't invite every customer, invite them in the order their moves were completed. Never choose who to invite based on how their move went.
  • Use our standard invitation without adding your own wording about ratings.

Don't

  • Invite only customers you think are happy or check how they feel first and then invite only the happy ones.
  • Offer anything for a review, such as a discount, refund, gift or prize entry.
  • Tell customers what to write or what rating to give.
  • Invite your employees, their family or friends, or anyone else connected to your company.
  • Ask customers to write a review on your crew's phone or tablet.
  • Pressure customers who don't want to leave a review.

Fake Reviews Are Never Allowed

Never write, buy, request or post a fake review, whether it's about your own company or a competitor. That includes reviews written by your staff, family or friends, reviews bought from review sellers, and reviews written with AI tools. Fake reviews are illegal under federal law and can lead to FTC penalties.

We use automated checks, our moderators and reports from the community to find fake reviews. When we find them, we remove them and take action against the company behind them.

Never Pressure a Customer About a Review

Customers have the right to post honest reviews. Under the federal Consumer Review Fairness Act, a contract term that bans or penalizes honest reviews can't be enforced, and using one is illegal. You must never:

  • Put a clause in your contracts or terms that limits reviews or charges a fee for them.
  • Threaten a customer, or say you'll take legal action, to stop or remove a review.
  • Hold back or delay a customer's belongings because of a review.
  • Make a refund, discount or fix conditional on changing or removing a review.

You're welcome to fix a customer's problem. If they choose to update their review afterward, that's their decision.

Responding to Reviews

You can post a public reply to any review on your profile. A good reply can win back a customer and show others how you handle problems.

  • Keep replies polite, professional and factual.
  • Don't attack, insult or threaten the reviewer.
  • Don't share the customer's private information, such as a phone number, address or account details.
  • If you want to resolve the issue, share a phone number or email the customer can use to reach you.
  • If you use AI to draft a reply (a Premium tool), read and edit the draft before you post it. The reply is yours, and these rules apply to it.

We check replies before they go live, and we remove replies that break these rules. You can't contact reviewers through our platform about their review.

If You Disagree with a Review

We don't take sides in disputes between moving companies and customers. A low rating or a review you disagree with isn't a reason for us to remove it. The best response is a calm public reply that gives your side of the story.

Reporting a Review

If a review breaks our guidelines, use the "Report" button on the review and tell us why. A moderator usually looks at reports within one to three days. While we check, the review may be hidden for a short time.

Good reasons to report a review

  • It's harmful or illegal, such as threats, hate speech or obscene content.
  • It includes private information, such as a phone number or home address.
  • It's advertising or spam.
  • It's not based on a real experience with your company.
  • It's about a different company.

Not reasons to report a review

  • It's negative or has a low rating.
  • You disagree with the customer's opinion.
  • It mentions or compares you with a competitor.

Report a review only when you honestly believe it breaks our guidelines. Reporting honest negative reviews as fake, again and again, is misuse of our platform.

What If You Don't Recognize a Reviewer?

Report the review as not based on a real experience and share any records you have. We may ask the reviewer for proof of the move, such as a booking confirmation, contract, invoice or bill of lading. If they can't show they used your company, we remove the review.

Using Your Reviews and Rating in Your Marketing

  • Quote reviews accurately. Don't edit them or take them out of context.
  • Show your current rating, not an old one.
  • Don't pick out a few positive reviews in a way that suggests your overall rating is higher than it is.
  • Don't call a review "Verified" unless it shows that label on My Good Movers.
  • Don't use our name or logo in a way that suggests we endorse you, rank you higher than we do, or work for you.

Paid Programs Don't Change the Rules

Moving companies pay us for a Premium subscription, paid add-ons and per-lead fees. Paying us doesn't change how we treat your reviews, which reviews we show, your star rating or your place in our organic rankings. Payment changes only where your ads appear (labeled "Ad"), which extra state pages you appear on (labeled "Ad"), and whether you receive quote requests. See How We Rank and Sort Movers and Basic vs Premium Subscription for details. Our Terms for Moving Companies explain how paid programs, billing and cancellation work.

What Happens If You Break These Rules?

Depending on what happened, we may:

  • Remove fake, bought or pressured reviews.
  • Turn off your review invitation tool.
  • Lower your profile's visibility in our results.
  • Show a warning on your profile so customers know what happened.
  • End paid agreements or suspend or remove your listing.
  • Report serious cases to the FTC, FMCSA or other authorities.

See Action We Take for details.

What If You Disagree with a Decision?

Reply to the email we sent you about the decision and explain why you disagree. If it still isn't resolved, you can file an appeal. See Action We Take for how appeals work.

Changes to These Guidelines

We may update these guidelines from time to time. The date at the top of this page shows when they last changed. If something isn't covered here, we decide based on what keeps reviews honest and useful for people planning a move.
